Hi, this is Steven Sadler and we’ve been talking about the life of Jesus but now we’re coming into the formation of the gospels and the New Testament, and I wanted to explain a little bit about the New Testament you may already know. Formally known as the Greek New Testament, most of it was written in Koine Greek. There are some 5,400 different manuscripts that have been discovered and referenced, mostly dating from the fourth century though. We do have the scrap of the gospel of John, it dates to the mid-second century but most of the writings come much, much later.

The ones that were chosen out of the hundreds of gospels that were sort of true. The ones that were chosen were the ones used in the churches where Paul preached, simply put they didn’t use the ones that have been used in Israel. Those Christians, the first, were considered Ebionites and Judaizers by the Europeans and they were taught only the Greco-Roman version of Christ's teachings.

So I want to make sure you understand that there’s a difference, as a matter of fact Dr. Erdmann, a leading scholar in the formation of the New Testament, says that the proto-orthodox scribes concerned about the use or abuse of their scripture "Occasionally changed them in order to make them more useful for orthodox causes unless available for non-orthodox Christians". Simply put, the scriptures were routinely revised, amended and changed over time. Many Christians believe that there was only one Bible from the beginning, and this if factually incorrect.
