Christian History 13 The Gospel of Thomas 1
The History of Christianity H13 - Saint Thomas (Transcribed from the YouTube Mini Series)
Steven Sadleir: Hi I’m Steven Sadleir and one of my favorites of all ancient Gospels, if we call them the lost gospels or the Gnostic gospels. Although Gnostic gospels could include a lot other gospels from later centuries like the late second, third or fourth. And I am not referring to those right now. I just want to talk about the earliest ones.
The ones that were used by the Semitic Christians in Israel and Egypt and those areas where they spoke Aramaic, and sometimes Greek because we have Greek translations too and many of these. But what’s so fascinating is that they’re revealing to us a whole new way of understanding Christ’s teachings that they were actually looking to find an inner realization of God, and that isn’t necessarily clearly reflected in the New Testament. We have many great teachings in the New Testament. But those who are primarily indicative of the Northern Churches where Paul evangelized, like Turkey, Greece and Italy, where his epistles circulated and where Luke wrote the book of Acts. And to the people that were hearing his message, it took on a different tone and terror apparently, history is teaching us than what the original Jewish Christians what they believe.
So this is the time for us to explore and look at what is there. The Gospel of Thomas was a good example. It’s perhaps the oldest. It’s certainly one of the oldest. It certainly dates to the mid-first century and it’s a collection of 114 sayings and half of which also appear in the synoptic gospels such as Matthew, Mark and Luke, but they’re shorter and pithier in the gospel of Thomas, which has lead historians to believe that they were probably written first and the more eloquent verses developed later with the writing of the New Testament. But in Thomas, we also get guidance to look within to find God, to inquire into the nature of our selves.
So a lot of those writings didn’t get included. I don’t see how learning more threatens Christianity or your faith by coming to understand your true nature, your spiritual nature. So the essence of it that there’s a living spirit within you and where to look within to discover this part of ourselves.
So I bet you to contemplate that as a meditation and then read the book, “Christ Enlighten: The Lost Teachings of Jesus”. Go on and look at some of these salient points. So see if doesn’t move you like it moved me. See if it doesn’t like Christ speaking to you. I mean if Christ said this and apparently, the people that actually walked Him believed that He said these things, you want to know it. Find out.
